The Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs, each about the size of a fist. They are located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine.Healthy kidneys filter about a half cup of blood every minute, removing wastes and extra water to make urine. The urine flows from the kidneys to the bladder through two thin tubes of muscle called ureters, one on each side of your bladder. Your bladder stores urine. Your kidneys, ureters, and bladder are part of your urinary tract.Your kidneys remove wastes and extra fluid from your body. Your kidneys also remove acid that is produced by the cells of your body and maintain a healthy balance of water, salts, and minerals - such as sodium, calcium, phosphorus, and potassiumin your blood.Without this balance, nerves, muscles, and other tissues in your body may not work normally.

Your kidneys also make hormones that helpcontrol your blood pressure, make red blood cells, and keep your bones strong and healthy. Blood flows into your kidney through the renal artery. This large blood vessel branches into smaller and smaller blood vessels until the blood reaches the nephrons. In the nephron, your blood is filtered by the tiny blood vessels of the glomeruli and then flows out of your kidney through the renal vein.Your blood circulates through your kidneys many times a day. In a single day, your kidneys filter about approx. 150 litres of blood. Most of the water and other substances that filter through your glomeruli are returned to your blood by the tubules(GFR – glomerulus filtration rate), only 1 to 2 litres become urine.

GFR is an equation that uses your creatinine, age, race and gender to see how well your kidneys are working. Creatinine is the level of muscle waste in your blood stream. Kidneys are supposed to filter out this waste into urine. GFR (glomerular filtration rate) and creatinine are usually measured and reported together. GFR is the best measure of kidney function but both creatinine and GFR can be useful indicators of your kidney health. If GFR goes down, it’s a bad sign. If creatinine goes up, it’s a bad sign. In general, a “good” GFR number is above 60 and a “good” creatinine number is below 1.2.

It can also reduce your blood pressure and boost your heart health, which are both important to preventing kidney damage. People with diabetes, or a condition that causes high blood sugar, may develop kidney damage. When your body’s cells can’t use the glucose (sugar) in your blood, your kidneys are forced to work extra hard to filter your blood. Over years of exertion, this can lead to life-threatening damage. High blood pressure can cause kidney damage. If high blood pressure occurs with other health issues like diabetes, heart disease, or high cholesterol, the impact on your body can be significant. Regular, consistent water intake is healthy for your kidneys. Water helps clear sodium and toxins from your kidneys. It also lowers your risk of chronic kidney disease.Aim for at least 1.5 to 2 liters of fluid drinking in a day. Exactly how much water you need depends largely on your health and lifestyle.

People with no kidney issues who take the medicine (OTC – like NSAIDS – Brufen, diclofenac etc) occasionally are likely in the clear.
